Meet Sherri: The mail carrier who out-Frenched the Governor General

Sherri is 56, based in Canada, works as a mail carrier, and has been on her language learning journey with Sylvi since 2025. She is also, apparently, better at French than the Governor General of Canada. But we'll get to that…
Why French?
Sherri has always been fascinated by language. She finds people who can switch between languages with ease genuinely impressive - the kind of thing that stops her in her tracks. Living in a bilingual country made the pull towards French feel almost inevitable. Why wouldn't you want to properly connect with the other half of your country?
So she decided to learn! Not for a holiday, not for a job requirement. Just because language matters to her, and Canada has two of them.
Her favourite French word right now
Bof.
If you haven't come across it yet, bof is basically the French word for "meh" - except it’s French, so it sounds beautiful. One syllable that says everything and nothing at the same time. Sherri is currently obsessed with it and so are we!
Favourite Sylvi feature?
The progress report! It doesn't just tell her she made mistakes - it breaks down exactly what was said and points her to the specific things she needs to work on. At A2 level on the CEFR framework, that kind of targeted feedback is everything. You need to know why something was wrong, not just that it was. For anyone serious about building real-world language use, this kind of precision matters.
The breakthrough moments
Sherri has two very Canadian breakthroughs 🇨🇦
The first happened on a trip to Quebec City. Her tour guide told her she spoke better French than the Governor General of Canada! We've heard the Governor General rushed to download Sylvi after hearing this.
The second was pulling up to a Tim Hortons drive-through in Montreal, ordering in French, and not getting switched to English. If you've ever tried to speak French in Canada and had the person immediately reply in English, you'll know exactly why this counts as a win - that is speaking confidence at it’s finest!
What’s next for Sherri?
She came to Sylvi not to tick a box, but because she believes language connects people - and Canada gives you two chances to do it. From A2 towards conversational fluency, she's well on her way. And with a potential retirement in Nice on the horizon, Sherri will be one of those people who switches between languages with ease.
